As a child, Satpal Singh found tremendous fascination with the Indian percussion instrument, the tabla. As an amateur artist he played as accompanist for Kirtans in the Sikh community around the Greater Toronto Area while he trained in vocals and harmonium.

With his childhood love for the sweet rhythms of the tabla always in his heart, Satpal began his professional studies under the instruction of his Guru, Shri. Ritesh Das in 2002. His persistence and dedication to his practice propelled his studies and he was invited to join the Toronto Tabla Ensemble (TTE) in 2005.

He has accompanied artists such as former Tea Party Member, Jeff Martin, and accomplished Kathak dancer, Joanna de Souza.  To this day, his childhood fascination continues and his driving inspiration to excel in his studies are drawn from phenomenal personalities in the music world, namely Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa.

Satpal teaches Tabla classes for Sanskriti Arts across the Greater Toronto Area.

Satpal Singh

Tabla Instructor, SAE

It's priceless to see a student capture the essence of a taal from within, not just at the tips of their fingers.

Sitting in class with the students, it's so easy for us to all get lost in the rhythms and melodious tunes of our drums.

Teaching tabla for me is not just about sharing knowledge, but about sharing the joy of music and the satisfaction of being a musician.
