The roots of Indian classical dance can be traced to 400 BC in the Natya Shastra (theory of dance)
by Bharat Muni (a philosopher and scriptural scholar of that period).
Although nritya (dance) is an essential element of Indian Natya Shastra, it is not the only one. Integral to Natya are Abhinaya (drama using facial expressions and gestures), Mudras (hand gestures) and many different types of hand movements and footwork.
